Dr. Steven R. Cummings is an emeritus Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Associate Chair for Clinical Research at the University of California, San Francisco. In addition, he is the Director of the SF Coordinating Center and a program member of the University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In 1996, Dr Cummings was elected to the American Association of Physicians and to the Council of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. In 2000, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine in the National Academy of Science.

Dr. Cummings has written dozens of articles for such medical publications as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Annals of Internal Medicine and has also co-edited the first and second editions of Designing Clinical Research: An Epidemiologic Approach, published by Williams and Wilkins in 1988 and 2000, respectively. He was the lead investigator on the MORE Trial that showed that Raloxifene reduced breast cancer risk.

Anthony I. Sebba, MD, FACR

Dr. Anthony Sebba graduated for the University of Cape Town, South Africa and completed his fellowship in rheumatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC. He is a rheumatologist in clinical practice and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of South Florida.

He has been Principal Investigator in many studies in osteoporosis and has several rheumatology publications. Most recently he has been the lead author of a head to head trial comparing alendronate and risedronate. He has lectured both nationally in the US and internationally on osteoporosis and he will be chairing a satellite symposium and lecturing at this year’s American College of Rheumatology meeting.

Dr John D. Kaufman is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He is president of the Osteoporosis Interest Group of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and former director of the World Orthopedic Osteoporosis Organization. Dr. Kaufman is a member of the AAOS Women’s Health Issues Committee and a previous member of the AAOS Osteoporosis Task Force. He has published many articles on osteoporosis and is section editor for metabolic bone disease of Orthopedics Today.

Dr M. Susan Burke graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1979 and subsequently completed her residency in internal medicine at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pa, in 1982. Since then, Dr Burke has been the director of the Internal Medicine Clinical Care Center at Lankenau Hospital. She is board-certified in internal medicine and geriatrics and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Burke also serves as preceptor for medical students from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, where she is a clinical assistant professor of medicine.

Dr. Burke is a two-time recipient of the Osler-Blockley Award from Thomas Jefferson University for excellence in teaching medicine at the bedside, and has also received the residents’ award for best teacher from the Lankenau internal medicine house staff. Dr. Burke lectures nationally on numerous geriatric topics and has published chapters, articles, CD-ROMs and webcasts on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

Eric D. Newman, MD, FACP

Dr. Newman received his B.A. in Biology from Johns Hopkins University and Medical Degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and a rheumatology fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center. During his medical school training, Dr. Newman was the recipient of a two-year NIH research grant. He has been on staff at Geisinger since 1988, and has been Director of Rheumatology since 1997. In 2002 he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Division of Medicine.

He is very active in clinical research, focusing on clinical trials and outcomes research in rheumatology. Dr. Newman developed and maintains the Rheumatology Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcomes Database, which currently has information on 30,000 patients encompassing over 170,000 clinic visits. He is a well-published investigator and has received several teaching awards by the housestaff.

Dr. Newman serves as the physician leader for implementation of EPIC, the electronic medical record, for medical subspecialties. In addition, he is the physician leader of the Advanced Access Program, and is nationally recognized for his pioneering work in improving access to care for patients with rheumatic diseases.

Dr. Newman has played an integral role in the design, implementation, and monitoring of the Geisinger Osteoporosis Disease Management Program since its inception in 1996. This program has received 3 national awards and generated 12 peer reviewed publications. Dr. Newman serves as Chair of the Osteoporosis Disease Management Team.

Ellen Hirschman Miller, MD

Ellen Hirschman Miller, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Vice President of Academic Affairs of the Franklin Hospital Medical Center in New York. She also has a private practice in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Reproductive Endocrinology in Hewlett, NY.

Dr. Miller received her medical degree from New Jersey Medical School in 1980 and completed her post-graduate work at Beth Israel Medical Center and Columbia University. She is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Fertility and Women’s Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists as well as a member of the Steering and Scientific Committee for the World Foundation for Medical Studies in Female Health.

Dr. Miller has conducted extensive research in the areas of endocrinology and women’s health, and has authored articles that have been published in numerous medical journals.

Judith Andariese, RN

Director, Osteoporosis Prevention Center

Judith Andariese, RN, Director of the Osteoporosis Prevention Center at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, has long been involved in women’s health issues. Formerly the coordinator of a breast health education and counseling program, Ms. Andariese has utilized those skills as a nurse clinician in the Osteoporosis Prevention Center for 8 years and has practiced orthopedic nursing at the Hospital for Special Surgery for 13 years.

Ms. Andariese is a frequent lecturer to health care professionals and corporate and community based groups as well as appearing in both print and television media. She has been appointed to the Nurses Advisory Board for a major pharmaceutical company and to the Nurses Steering Committee of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. She is certified as a Fitness Specialist for Older Adults. She has also published several abstracts since joining the Osteoporosis Prevention Center and holds memberships in several professional societies. From 1999 to the present, she has served as Associate Director for the New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program grant in the New York metropolitan Area.

Before her nursing career, Ms. Andariese held positions in the advertising industry as well as owning and operating a photography business for several years.
