Why Should Managed Care Care?

The tragedy of bone fragility and fracture is three-fold: far too many Americans suffer from it, much of it is avoidable, and it is likely to increase at a staggering rate if no immediate action is taken. Commercial providers and affiliated healthcare professionals are catalysts for change and can realize savings–both in terms of health and cost–by supporting preventive care before fractures take place.

How Much Are Osteoporotic Fractures Costing Annually for the Individuals Covered by your Organization?

The clinical outcome of osteoporosis is fracture. The fracture rate attributable to osteoporosis in people age 45 and older is 1.8% annually* and the average cost per fracture (any site) is $17,800**. Independently, these figures may not seem largely significant. However, the enormity of this preventable burden on an individual health plan or insurer basis is clearly illustrated below. The illustration represents direct care costs only - indirect care expenditures add to the total substantially. Considering the magnitude of the problem, prevention is the only cost-effective approach.

Annual Fracture Burden Estimator

Enter the number of individuals your plan covers 45+ years of age
Number of people in the organization probable to fracture this year = 0
Total annual fracture direct care cost = 0
Early and effective detection and intervention can result in fracture prevention—thereby significantly reducing the enormous socioeconomic impact. In fact, treatment of osteoporosis has been shown to reduce the risk of subsequent fractures by 40-60 percent (Andrade et al, 2003).

Partnership for Progress Mission
